Zamfara lacks enough soldiers to fight insecurity yet the few we have are being taken away – Gov

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the state, claiming soldiers are being redeployed out of the state.

Instead of downsizing the troops, the governor requested additional soldiers to combat the insecurity.

He told BBC Hausa that Zamfara needs additional military equipment, stating that the state deserves the same level of support as other states.

He said, “I met with both National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa to discuss the worsening security situation in Zamfara.

“While the federal government controls the military and police, I’m exploring every avenue to bring an end to this insecurity.

“One initiative under my control is a volunteer program, we trained these individuals from all 13 local governments three months ago. Their local knowledge aids security agencies in their fight against crime.

“Everyone involved is putting in maximum effort, they are trying their best and in our part, we are also committed to doing everything possible to restore peace to Zamfara.

“I told Chief of Defense Staff that we need more soldiers in the state but actually what is happening is that the existing troops are being redeployed elsewhere, this is not right.

“I also requested additional equipment and military vehicles which supposedly we have in abundance in Zamfara similar to what other states have received. They confirmed to me that my requests would be considered.”
