Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, arrived at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja on Monday in response to accusations made against him.
However, security personnel allegedly refused members of his entourage entry to the anti-graft agency, which caused friction at the gate.
Supporters of the former governor gathered around the intersection leading to the commission’s headquarters, causing a brief pandemonium at the EFCC gate, according to reports.
One of El-Rufai’s supporters said in an internet video that the EFCC used tear gas to disperse their gathering while permitting anti-El-Rufai demonstrators to gather near the building.
The anti-El-Rufai demonstrators were observed urging the commission to look into the former governor’s corruption claims related to his term and his latest allegation that Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, had his phone tapped.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the EFCC are two anti-graft organizations that are presently looking into claims of corruption related to El-Rufai’s tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
The former governor has continuously denied any misconduct, characterizing the probes as persecution with political motivations.
Uba Sani, El-Rufai’s successor, began an investigation against the previous government in March 2024. El-Rufai then went to the Federal High Court to contest the investigative report’s findings.
Regarding his presence before the commission, the EFCC has not yet released an official statement as of the time of publication.
