Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu as New IGP, Frank Mbah and Other DIGs Set to Exit

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, President Bola Tinubu announced a significant security reorganization. He dismissed Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun and replaced him with Assistant Inspector General Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

Disu, who most recently oversaw the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, is anticipated to take office right away and supervise a change in leadership across the country.

Egbetokun’s tenure, which started in June 2023 and was prolonged past the customary retirement age, ended abruptly when he was instructed to write his handover notes following a meeting at the Presidential Villa, according to sources from the Presidency and the Police Service Commission.

Disu, a career officer with more than thirty years of service, was known for his tech-savvy, intelligence-driven policing after leading the Intelligence Response Team and the Rapid Response Squad.

In light of growing security concerns and current high-profile investigations, the nomination is a calculated attempt to give the Nigeria Police Force new tactical vigor.

He will succeed IGP Olukayode Egbetokun as Nigeria’s 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.

A formal handover ceremony is scheduled for Louis Edet House in Abuja, and a statement from the Presidency and Force Headquarters is anticipated soon.
