Human rights advocate Femi Falana has suggested that the federal government collaborate with other nations to increase diplomatic pressure on the US for its involvement in the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Iran.
During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday, he made the call.
Falana denounced US President Donald Trump’s conduct, claiming that he was disobeying UN resolutions and international law.
He called on the Nigerian government to cooperate with other nations to guarantee respect for international law and to persuade superpowers like China and Russia to become involved in the worsening situation.
“International law is disregarded and treated with contempt by President Trump. As a result, he has removed the United States from around 66 UN resolutions. The UN resolutions are meaningless to him, Falana claimed.
According to the senior attorney, Nigeria should engage with other countries to promote moderation in order to rekindle its tradition of multilateral diplomacy, akin to the nation’s involvement during the Non-Aligned Movement.
As in the past, it is our responsibility as a nation to work together with other nations. When you discuss the days of non-alignment, we need to act quickly to work with other nations in order to put pressure on Mr. Trump,” he stated.
Falana also emphasized the significance of convincing powerful nations like China and Russia to take diplomatic action, claiming that they have significant sway over Iran.
“China and Russia are the two nations that Iran will listen to, so we need to convince them to step in,” he continued.
Falana urged Nigeria to fortify its internal security framework and lessen its dependency on outside forces for stability, going beyond the global aspect of the problem.
“Nigeria needs to wake up.” We need to take a cue from Iran that an imperialist nation like the United States cannot ensure law and order in your nation unless you reorganize your own nation and equip your military forces and police force,” he stated.
Falana also questioned why Nigeria’s state-owned refineries were no longer in service despite billions of dollars being spent on their renovation, criticizing the nation’s management of its refining capacity.
“If we claim to have four refineries, no one is discussing them anymore. The Dangote Refinery is presently the only source of power for the NNPC. Is it the way a nation should be run? Approximately $2.9 billion was spent on the upkeep of our four refineries after money was wasted, he claimed.
