The Oyo State government’s decision to install Sharafadeen Alli, one of the candidates running for governor on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, as a beaded crown-wearing Oba in Ibadanland is now causing conflict in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The appointment of Alli, who presently serves as the National Assembly representative for the Oyo South Senatorial District, was reportedly announced on Thursday.
According to our correspondent, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters Ademola Ojo signed a letter announcing the intention.
In a letter to Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, dated March 26, 2026, Ojo stated that the coronation is long overdue.
High Chief Alli, High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, and High Chief Kola Babalola were among those designated to be installed as Obas.
Ojo insisted that the coronation ceremony has been set for April 3, 2026, and that Mapo Hall is the venue.
However, it was reported that the statement has caused friction in some areas of Ibadan because the topic is now being discussed, particularly among the political elite.
The scheduled coronation may be a positive step or a political retaliation, according to various parties and persons analyzing the situation.
Some believe that the coronation cannot have a detrimental impact on Alli’s aspiration to become governor, while others perceive it as an attempt to thwart it.
Even if Alli is installed as an Oba wearing a beaded crown, the current law does not prevent him from becoming governor, according to an Ibadan native who spoke under the condition of anonymity.
“It’s a legal matter,” he declared. He continues to pursue his goal of becoming governor against the law. He has the option to reject the beaded crown. Are you aware that the present Olubadan first turned down the crown? He accepted it when he was prepared to transform into Olubadan.
