NIS Suspends Border Comptrollers Over Alleged Extortion

Following widely circulated internet complaints, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has opened an investigation into claims of rampant extortion by its employees along the Lagos-Seme border corridor.

In order to guarantee a transparent and unobstructed investigation, Comptroller General of Immigration Kemi Nandap ordered the suspension of comptrollers in charge of the impacted commands as part of immediate actions.

In a statement made by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the Comptroller General severely denounced the activities captured in the reports, describing them as a clear breach of the Service’s core values.

Such behavior, according to Nandap, is “unacceptable and a direct violation of the core values and operational standards of the Service.”

The NIS leadership directed a comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying all personnel implicated in the suspected extortion.

The statement claims that in order to guarantee that “appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect to those found wanting,” “a thorough investigation” has been required.

The Service emphasized that any officer found to be at fault will be punished in accordance with its rules.

The Service reassured the public by restating its dedication to professionalism and effective service delivery at all points of entry and departure throughout the nation.

It stressed that it would not allow any act capable of eroding public trust or harming its institutional integrity.

The statement stated that “the Service remains unwavering in its commitment to delivering professional and efficient services” and that wrongdoing will never be tolerated.

The NIS urged Nigerians to report instances of misbehavior via its official social media accounts and 24-hour contact center in order to increase accountability.

According to Akinlabi, internal processes are being strengthened to guarantee discipline and openness throughout all formations.

The action, he continued, highlights the Service’s goal of facilitating legal migration while upholding the greatest standards of ethics and professionalism.
