The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State has officially backed out of the plan to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). They say the ruling party refused to accept important terms and conditions that were brought up during negotiations.
The main opposition party said that since the defection talks fell through, it has been looking into other political options that could work.
It should be remembered that after he tried to leave the ruling APC but failed, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said he might leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) because of the ongoing leadership dispute in his own party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Sama’ila Burga, the state chairman of the PDP, said at a press conference at the PDP Secretariat along Yandoka Road in Bauchi yesterday that the party’s decision to stop talking about politics was because the two parties couldn’t agree on important issues.
He said the purpose of the briefing was to let the public know about changes in the party, its leaders, and important people who are involved with it.
He said that the PDP came to the talks with the honest goal of helping everyone understand each other better and looking into working together politically for the good of the state as a whole.
He did say, though, that the talks didn’t go as planned, saying, “We went into the talks with good intentions and an open mind, but we couldn’t find common ground.”
Burga also said that the party talked to and thought carefully about the decision with its most important stakeholders. The consultation process included members of the National Assembly, State House of Assembly, and local government party leaders.
He said that the main reason the APC leadership couldn’t agree on some important terms and conditions during the negotiations was that they couldn’t accept them.
“There was no agreement on a number of important issues, so we thought it was best to stop the process,” he said.
The PDP chairman also said again that the party is committed to following political paths that are best for the people of Bauchi State and their goals.
He said, “We will keep looking at other political options that will be good for the people.”
Under Governor Bala Mohammed, the party reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance, unity, and collective progress. It will also continue to focus on the state’s development and the welfare of its citizens.
He told reporters that the party was aware of the deadlines for elections and would do everything it could to meet legal requirements, leaving no stone unturned.
He went on to say that the PDP would keep looking into all of the political options that are open to it in the best interests of its members and the people of Bauchi State.
After his failed attempt to switch to the APC, Governor Mohammed had hinted that he might switch to the ADC.
People said that the APC agreed to a 60/40 power-sharing deal that favored the governor and also gave him a Senate seat.
The ruling party, on the other hand, did not let him choose a successor, which caused the defection talks to fall apart.
The governor told the ADC delegation, which was led by Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), about his latest plan when they visited him at the Presidential Lodge, Government House, Bauchi.
