Public Space Tracker Honours NUPRC as Most Outstanding Agency, Applauds Komolafe’s Leadership

Under the leadership of its Chief Executive, Engineer Gbenga Komolafe, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has been recognized as the most transparent and exceptional government agency in the nation. Under his direction, the oil and gas industry in the country has established new standards for efficiency and accountability.

NUPRC has shown “remarkable openness, policy innovation, and integrity in the management of Nigeria’s upstream petroleum resources” since Komolafe took office, according to a statement released in Ghana on Wednesday by the Public Space Tracker in West Africa.

The organization highlighted that transparency in resource governance is not just a catchphrase but a quantifiable practice that has come to be associated with the NUPRC, framing the Commission as an example of how regulatory agencies ought to operate in a democracy.

According to Dr. Ousman Zaharadeen, Convener of the Public Space Tracker, the Commission under Komolafe has restored confidence among investors, civil society organizations, and citizens by providing transparent data on oil production, licensing, royalties, and revenue remittances.

It has been demonstrated by Engineer Gbenga Komolafe that a government agency may be both transparent and effective with intentional leadership. In terms of disseminating reliable information, interacting with stakeholders in a genuine manner, and making sure that Nigeria’s petroleum resources are handled fairly and responsibly, the NUPRC has demonstrated exceptional proficiency. This, in our opinion, makes it Nigeria’s most exceptional and transparent agency at the moment,” Zaharadeen stated.

Assuring adherence to the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), releasing industry statistics, and cultivating trust through frequent interactions with operators, communities, and civil society were all highlighted by the panel. These actions have not only increased public accountability but also improved Nigeria’s reputation in the world for resource governance, it continued.

According to Zaharadeen, the oil and gas sector in Nigeria, which has long been plagued by corruption and secrecy, has become less opaque as a result of NUPRC’s transparency efforts.

Nigeria is now on the way to better energy justice and budgetary discipline, he stressed, thanks to the Commission’s leadership in upstream petroleum regulation changes.

Because of the Commission’s strict regulatory oversight and insistence on real-time monitoring of crude oil production, leaks have been reduced and government revenues have increased. Extractive governance can be inclusive and people-centered, as its interactions with host communities have shown,” the statement said.

Along with praising NUPRC’s cooperative strategy against oil theft, Public Space Tracker in West Africa emphasized that the Commission’s involvement has been essential to recent increases in output and income.

Because of its transparency, NUPRC has gained respect both domestically and internationally. Because of the clear, consistent, and equitable application of the regulations, Nigeria is now attracting more serious-minded investors, according to Zaharadeen.

With a focus on accountability and openness, the organization called on other government institutions to follow the Commission’s lead in restoring public confidence in governance.

Nigeria needs regulators in all industries who can follow the NUPRC’s lead, not just in the petroleum industry. He stated that this is not about propaganda but rather quantifiable measures that help common people, bolster institutions, and calm investors.

Public Space Tracker in West Africa urged long-term improvements but said it was confident that under Komolafe’s direction, the Commission would keep enhancing openness, fortifying Nigeria’s fiscal foundation, and propelling the nation’s shift to a more responsible resource economy.

We are proud to have recognized the NUPRC as the federation’s most exceptional and transparent organization. In support of the Nigerian people, we applaud Engr. Komolafe for his outstanding leadership and implore him to continue on this path of transparency, responsibility, and innovation,” the statement said.
