When Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, arrived at the airport on Thursday from Cairo, Egypt, security personnel made an effort to arrest him.
His media assistant, Muyiwa Adekeye, revealed this in a post on his 𝕏 account.
The security guards tried to arrest El-Rufai, but he resisted and insisted on a written invitation. They then snatched his passport from an aide, he claimed.
As Malam Nasir Elrufai came on a flight from Cairo today, security personnel attempted to arrest him, according to Adekeye’s account. In the absence of an official invitation, Malam El-Rufai refused to follow them. However, they stole his passport from a helper.
As political tensions in the nation increased, El-Rufai had previously expressed concern that the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), would be planning his arrest.
Former APC leader El-Rufai, who is currently a leader of the opposition African Democratic Congress, asserted that there was pressure on certain lawmakers to either join the ruling party or stay in its ranks.
The statements were made by him in an interview with BBC Hausa.
Although he has not been arrested, the former governor, who has recently stepped up his criticism of the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s administration, said that some of his close associates had already been taken into custody.
