Former US President, Donald Trump, has described his impeachment trial as a yet another phase in the ongoing witch hunt.
“This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country,” Trump said, adding that “no president has ever gone through anything like it.”
“It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree,” he continued.
In the statement, Trump declared himself “a champion for the unwavering rule of law, the heroes of law enforcement, and the right of Americans to peacefully and honorably debate the issues of the day without malice and without hate.”
At the same time, he said reason behind his impeachment trial was the fact that his political opponents “cannot forget the almost 75 million people, the highest number ever for a sitting president, who voted for us just a few short months ago.”
The former US president pledged to unveil his concept of the country’s future soon.
“In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people,” Trump said, addressing his supporters and thanking them for their support. “We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant, and limitless American future.”
The former president also thanked his lawyers, as well as senators and members of the House of Representatives, who opposed the impeachment trial.
“Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun,” he said. “Together there is nothing we cannot accomplish.”
Earlier on Saturday, US Senate voted 57-43 to impeach Trump. However, Trump was acquitted, because no less than 67 votes were required to convict him.
The US House of Representatives controlled by Democrats approved on January 13 a text of resolution on impeaching Trump, charging him with “incitement of insurrection.” The resolution said Trump had “demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain office.” Democrats initiated Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2019 but that attempt failed.
The new impeachment drive was initiated over Trump’s remarks on January 6 when his supporters stormed the Capitol Building in Washington DC to stop lawmakers from officially certifying the results of the November presidential election. This was a last-ditch attempt to prevent Democrat Joe Biden from becoming the new president.
The situation was unprecedented since for the first time in the country’s history a president (who has already left the post) was subject to the impeachment procedure twice.
