Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately cut short his ongoing retreat in France and return to Nigeria to address the escalating security crisis across the country.

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi expressed concern over the “glaring absence of governance” as violence and insecurity continue to surge in various parts of Nigeria. The call comes as the country grapples with widespread violence, insurgency, and terrorist attacks, especially in regions like Plateau, Zamfara, Borno, and the South-East.

Rising Security Concerns Across Nigeria

“Within just two weeks of the President’s absence, over 150 Nigerians have tragically lost their lives due to security breaches, particularly in Plateau and Zamfara States,” Obi wrote. He also highlighted the resurgence of insurgent activities in Nigeria’s North-East, particularly in Borno State, where both civilians and security forces have been victims of the violence.

Obi further mentioned the alarming rise in abductions and killings in the South-East and the repeated pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta, which signal growing instability in the region. These developments have prompted Obi to question the wisdom behind President Tinubu’s retreat in France.

Obi Criticizes Tinubu’s Absence During National Crisis

“Amid these disturbing developments, the President of Nigeria is holding a retreat in France, far from the center of national distress,” Obi said. He criticized the decision to hold a strategic leadership retreat in a peaceful foreign nation while Nigeria experiences widespread bloodshed and insecurity.

A Call for Immediate Action and Governance

Obi emphasized that his concerns were driven not by political ambition, but by a deep desire for effective governance. He urged President Tinubu to suspend his foreign engagements and return to Nigeria to confront the worsening security situation head-on.

“This fight is not about any individual,” Obi stated. “It’s about creating a Nigeria where every citizen can feel the impact of decisions and policies made by their leaders.”

Conclusion

Peter Obi’s call for President Tinubu to return to Nigeria amid rising insecurity reflects the urgent need for leadership during a time of national crisis. The former Labour Party presidential candidate is advocating for stronger governance and a decisive response to the growing violence in Nigeria.
