*A FORMER acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, was missing today when the Police Service Commission announced the promotion of 24 Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police.
There were reports that Magu was pencilled down for promotion despite allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had on Tuesday described the alleged plan as outrageous.
In July 2020, Magu was unceremoniously removed as EFCC’s acting chairman and later made to face very thorough investigation by the Justice Ayo Salami Presidential investigation panel.
The PDP, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said “it is indeed ludicrous, though true to its proclivity to cover corruption, that the Buhari Presidency, instead of allowing the law to take its course, is rather rewarding corruption by planning to promote an individual indicted for treasury looting and compromising of high-profile corruption cases for pecuniary gains.”
But in a statement by its Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission said Magu was not among 24 CPs promoted.
According to Ani, the decisions were the highpoints of the Commission’s 12th Plenary Meeting held on Tuesday and Wednesday, which was presided over by the Commission’s Chairman, Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector General of Police.
“The Commission declined the promotion of CP Magu pending clearance from the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and the Office of the Inspector General of Police,” the statement partly read.
