On Tuesday, the House of Representatives Committee on Army vowed to stand by the Nigerian Army as it works to ensure that everyone in the country is safe and secure.
The guarantee was given by Committee Chairman Abdullahi Mamudu during the panel’s inaugural meeting at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
At the same time, he revealed that the committee has created a four-week schedule of work to help it fulfill its purpose for the benefit of all Nigerians.
“Let us take this responsibility with all seriousness and know that we must put the Nigerian Army on a proper pedestal to be able to end the several challenges we have been having in terms of insecurity in the country,” the congressman added, welcoming the members to the conference.
“By virtue of the authority granted in Section 62 of the 1999 Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution as amended and Order XVIII B Rule 131, Ninth Edition, Standing Order of the House of Representatives, 2016,” the House Committee on Army is one of the Standing Committees of the National Assembly.
“This Order XVIII Rule 131, which created the Army Standing Committee, grants it the authority to supervise the operations of the Nigerian Army and permits it to take up any topic as ordered by the House on a specified mandate.
“The Nigerian Army; Ammunition Depots, Forts, Arsenal, Reservations and Establishments; Development Projects of the Nigerian Army; Army Barracks, Landed Property and Appurtenances; and Annual Budget Estimates of the Army” are all included in the committee oversight mandate.
“The only institution that sets democracy apart from other forms of government,” he continued. We also aspire to accomplish the cooperation that parliaments and the armed forces have enjoyed in the majority of democracies. The secretary of the committee, who oversees the secretariat for the committee, is expected to carry out his responsibilities with thoroughness, devotion, and unwavering dedication to committee assignments.
