The Nigeria Union of Teachers’ Federal Capital Territory Wing has ordered elementary school teachers to pick back up their postponed strike on Monday, January 15, 2024, until further notice.
This was stated in a press release issued on January 12, 2024, which came after the State Wing Standing Committee’s emergency meeting.
The NUT in the Federal Capital Territory’s chairman, Abdullahi Shafas, the secretary, Mrs. Margaret Jethro, and the publicity secretary, Ibukun Adekeye, all co-signed the communiqué.
Additionally, if the demands of the primary school teachers were not met by January 19, 2024, the SWSC invited secondary school teachers to join the strike on January 22.
On September 11, 2023, the union went on an indefinite strike in protest of several arrears, including the introduction of a 40% unique allowance and the payment of arrears for a minimum of 25 months of age.
NMA mistakes an MDCN directive that forbids physicians from turning away patients while on strike.
The NUT claimed that “nothing positive has taken place” during the six-week strike suspension that ended on November 7, 2023, and that the minister and area council chairmen’s refusal to heed their demands left the SWSC with no alternative but to order the strike’s resumption.
The statement said, in part, “We are worried that a number of meetings have occurred, yet the primary school teachers continue to suffer from the high cost of living that is related to the loss of fuel subsidies without assistance from anybody.
“The State Wing Standing Committee in Session has no choice but to order all primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory to resume the suspended strike in order to further press home her demands, as they are deeply saddened by the suffering of the teachers and the area council chairmen’s unwillingness to pay the teachers these aforementioned entitlements, including the delay in the minister’s intervention. The strike will begin on January 15, 2024, a Monday.
“The SWSC-on-Session equally resolved that all secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory will join in solidarity with effect from Monday, January 22, 2024 if the outstanding demands of the primary school teachers are not paid before Friday, January 19, 2024 – an injury to one is an injury to all.”
As a result, the union asked parents to start keeping their primary school-age children at home on Monday.
