The president, Agricultural Policy Research Network (APRNet), Prof. Anthony Onoja, has presented the first ever Draft National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy for Nigeria (2025-2029) to the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the relevant stakeholders for validation.
Prof Onoja who is also the team leader along with a team of experts made the disclosure in an interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend in Jos yesterday.
According to him, the event was declared open by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola.
He said it was a collaborative effort by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), WorldFish, Federal Ministry of Marine, Blue Economy, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, the Agricultural Policy Research Network (APRNet) and the Institute of Agricultural Research and Development, University of Port Harcourt.
He further said the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and Initiative on Aquatic Foods funded the project which started in 2022 as a contribution to sustainable development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Nigeria.
He explained that the aim of the policy draft was to provide protein and food security, job creation and reduce poverty in Nigeria, adding that they were looking forward to the successful launch of the programme and the implementation of its policy next year.
