Five cops killed, one missing as gunmen set ablaze Okigwe police area command
Gunmen have continued to wreak havoc on operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and public infrastructure in the state.
The latest attack came yesterday when unknown gunmen razed the Okigwe South Police Area Command situated in Orieagu in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
It was gathered that efforts made by police officers on duty to repel the attacks by the gunmen proved abortive as they opened fire on them (the cops) and set ablaze the security facility.
The invaders also reportedly set free all the suspects in the cells and carted away arms.
No fewer than five policemen lost their lives to the superior firepower of the assailants.
“Our area command headquarters in Okigwe south is on fire. Six policemen shot dead. They also freed the suspects before igniting a fire on the facility.” a police officer was quoted to have said.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesman of Imo State Police Command, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that five policemen were killed while one was missing during the attack.
He disclosed that the command had launched an investigation into the onslaught.
This attack came exactly three weeks after some gunmen attacked the Imo State Police headquarters and Owerri Correctional Centre.
The gunmen torched vehicles at the car park and set free over 1800 inmates from the correctional centre.
