Kano Police Arrest Principal Suspect In Homicide Case After 6 Years

Nearly after six years of relentless pursuit, the Kano State Police Command has apprehended the principal suspect in a 2018 homicide case.

The arrest of Magaji Yallo, 38, marks a significant milestone in the investigation of the murder of Gausu Umar Sadau, 35, who was brutally killed in Minjibir local government area of the state.

Kano State Police Spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, July 25, 2024, noting that the incident, which occurred on August 10, 2018, was reported by a resident of Kunya Village.

According to the report, Yallo and accomplices attacked Sadau with dangerous weapons, inflicting severe injuries, including cutting his leg vein.

The victim was immediately taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Initial investigations led to the arrest of two suspects, Rabiu Sarki Lota and Nasiru Adamu Namade, who were charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Despite these arrests, the principal suspect, Yallo, remained at large, evading law enforcement agents for almost six years.

Under the directive of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, a combined team of detectives was formed to track down Yallo and their sustained efforts and intelligence-led operations culminated in his arrest on Thursday.

The statement partly reads, “After review of cases under investigation by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, he raised a combined team of detectives and directed that the principal suspect be trail and arrested.

“On 15/07/2024, sustained follow-up coupled with intelligence-led technical operations led to the arrest of the principal suspect; Magaji Yallo, ‘m’, after five years, eleven months and four days, that is two thousand, one hundred and sixty (2160) days after the incident.

“On discreet investigation, the suspect confessed that they lured the victim to Wailari Quarters in Minjibir LGA, Kano State under the pretext that he was going to pay him his money, the sum of two hundred and seventy thousand naira (N270, 000.00) he owed him, and thereafter killed him,” the statement said.

SP Kiyawa said the suspect has already confessed to the crime and has been charged to Magistrate Court Number 34 Noman’sland Kano for prosecution.

CP Garba reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to ensuring the safety of residents and bringing criminals to justice.

“The Kano State Police Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that perpetrators of crimes face the full wrath of the law,” the statement stated.
