The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has been called for immediate dismissal by the Labour Party (LP).

The INEC Federal Commissioner in charge of voter education was also to be fired, according to the party. Festival Okoye.

The two people were accused of leading the commission in the savagery of the Nigerian presidential election of 2023 in a statement issued on Thursday by the Labour Party Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation.

It further stated that INEC squandered the resources provided to it by the national government and international organisations for the conduct of the country’s general elections in 2023.

The Labour Party campaign organisation also claimed that INEC spent billions of tax dollars on the BVAS and other technological advancements for the 2023 elections under the guise of doing so, but actually manually manipulated the results to impose their preferred presidential candidate on Nigerians.

Therefore, it demanded Yakubu and Okoye be fired immediately and prosecuted for the “crimes” they had committed.

The statement reads: “Following the final reports of the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room and the International Community regarding the desecration of the presidential election of February 25, 2023, the Labour Party Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation has unequivocally demanded the immediate dismissal from office and prosecution of Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, INEC Chairman, and Festus Okoye, INEC Federal Commissioner in charge of voter education.

As a result, they demanded a forensic financial investigation into the billions of naira that the government and the international community had donated and disbursed to INEC, asking them to punish the corrupt officials for wasting their money and illegally tampering with the presidential election in order to promote their preferred candidate.

They came to this conclusion because INEC spent billions of tax payer dollars on the pretence of deploying the BVAS and other technological innovations required for electronic storage and transmission of election results, but purposefully disregarded these noble inventions during the election in order to manipulate the election, and is now dubiously trying to suggest that manual collation of results may suffice, which will render all our technological advancements useless.

They argued that Mahmood and Okoye should receive a worse sentence because they committed more serious crimes if Adamawa REC can be prosecuted.
