The American Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jnr, said the Sokoto state is crucial to Nigeria because of its religious and cultural relevance.

Richard Mills, who spoke at the Government House in Sokoto while on a courtesy visit to the governor, said that aside from being hospitable, Sokoto state is equally lively. He added that he would want to visit repeatedly.

He stated that he was in the state to learn about their challenges, how the US has been helping, and how best they want the US to help.

”I am here for some reason. I recently arrived in Nigeria as the American Ambassador to Nigeria. I know Sokoto is an essential cultural and religious place in Nigeria.

‘” I am here to talk to the people of the state to find out what the issues are and what the US has been doing for the people of the state. I also want to talk with you to hear what the priorities are.”

The American Envoy, who expressed satisfaction with the state governor’s 9-Point Agenda, added that he has come to discuss further issues, including security, health, education, and others.

Responding, Governor Ahmed Aliya appreciated the American Envoy, saying the state has significantly benefited from US interventions, such as those of USAID and others.

“These interventions have been of great help in poverty reduction, increased democratic experiences and lots more in the state.”

The governor, however, appealed for more assistance, especially in security, women and youth empowerment, education, and other areas of development.

Giving a brief rundown of his stewardship, the governor said that in less than two years in office, he has carried out many activities in security, water supply, human capital development, and more.

Talking specifically on the issue of insecurity, the governor said he believes states are in better positions to address their challenges because they are familiar with the terrain and the people.
