All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Alhajj Alhassan Yaryasa has warned Governor Abba Yusuf against dissolving the state’s new emirates.
Former governor Abdullahi Ganduje established the emirates and replaced Kano’s Emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, with Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
Former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, political godfather to Governor Abba Yusuf, promised to reverse Ganduje’s decision and restore the Kano Emirate after the NNPP won the 2023 governorship election.
Alhajj Yaryasa, Kano South Tinubu Campaign Organisation Coordinator, advised Governor Yusuf not to dismantle the emirates.
He claimed that such a move would incite emirate residents to rebel, emphasizing the need for state peace.
Yaryasa claimed that outside forces were pressuring the governor to strain relations between the government and the emirate communities.
He told Governor Yusuf to put the state first over politics.
Dissolving the emirates could hurt the governor’s popularity, Yaryasa said.
He said traditional rulers are not political appointees and should only be removed for serious crimes.
Yaryasa told state elders to advise the governor against tampering with the new emirates.
He also supported legislation to prevent politicians from interfering in traditional institutions, emphasizing their importance in society.
Elders must advise the governor against caving to pressure from the new emirates because it will harm the state.
The country’s traditional institutions should be protected by law from politicians, especially governors and other elected officials.
The APC leader told Punch, “Politicians should respect traditional institutions, otherwise it will be rendered useless in the eyes of society.”
