After the ongoing rehabilitation contract between NNPCL and Italian company Maire Tecnimont SpA is finished, President Bola Tinubu has promised the organised labour that the Port Harcourt refineries will begin producing by December 2023, the Presidency has said.

Additionally, the Presidency reported that following a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the leadership of organised labour decided to halt further demonstrations against the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has put Nigerians through unimaginable hardship.

These were included in a statement released last night by Dele Alake, Special Advisor to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy.

“The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress, led by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and that of the Trade Union Congress, led by Comrade Festus Usifo, met with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday evening at the State House in Abuja,” read the statement.

The Labour Leaders made the decision to end the protest as a result of their frank and fruitful conversation with President Tinubu and their trust in his ability to promote an open and honest discussion of all the issues raised by the Labour Movement.

“They chose to continue having constructive dialogue with the government in order to resolve all outstanding problems that have an impact on Nigerians in general and the working class in particular.

“President Tinubu assured the Labour leaders that the Port Harcourt refineries would begin operating by December 2023 following the conclusion of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between NNPCL and the Italian company Maire Tecnimont SpA.

“President Tinubu assured the Labour leaders that he would continue to work for Nigeria’s best interests while pleading with the Labour leaders to join forces with him to create a better and economically thriving country.”
