The National Union of Road Transport Workers national secretariat was taken over by thugs who were purportedly accompanied by police, according to the Nigeria Labour Congress, who denounced the act.
The Nigerian Police are said to have been involved in the invasion of the NURTW national secretariat in Abuja, according to a communiqué released by the NLC following its Emergency National Administrative Council meeting on Monday.
The statement from the labor organization read, “The NAC noted the recent history of the Nigeria Police’s intervention in the internal affairs of numerous unions, which it regards as an infringement on the autonomy of union operations and a violation of the legal framework governing industrial relations.”
It denounced the Inspector General of Police’s suspected interference in the invasion of the NURTW National Secretariat, which was “intended to overthrow the duly elected union leadership and install an alternative faction.”
“NAC categorically demanded that the thugs and the police both immediately and unconditionally leave the illegally occupied NURTW National Secretariat. This demand must be met within 48 hours of the resolution’s passing.
The NLC urged President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the claims tying his name to those in charge of the invasion in an effort to promote transparency and responsibility, it stated.
The NLC emphasized that President Tinubu should make clear his position and deny any role in the occurrence as a result of being a product of democracy.
If the chosen NURTW leadership was not reinstated, the labor union threatened to strike.
The NAC’s resolutions “show its dedication to maintaining democratic ideals, defending the autonomy of unions, and ensuring the safety and rights of workers throughout Nigeria.
As the country closely monitors the developments, the NLC reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian labor unions and workers while calling for an urgent end to the current situation.
