A Build-A-Thon program for 1,500 secondary school pupils is scheduled to begin by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

A statement claims that 150 schools from three different locations—Owerri, Maiduguri, and Abeokuta—will participate in the four-day program. According to the organizers, a Build-A-Thon is an ecosystem that provides a range of educational possibilities, such as technology laboratories, workshops, and DIY boxes, to help kids develop their talents.

The Nigerian Communications Commission and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, an NGO with headquarters in the United Kingdom, are collaborating to host the event.

The project was introduced by Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani, who stated, “We firmly believe that technology will play an important role in our growth as a nation; therefore, we are equipping the next generation with the skills and knowledge to thrive in the digital era.”

We are dedicated to producing adults who are more digital savvy, and the only way we can do that is by implementing programs like this one, where students study in a controlled setting. We think Nigeria has many bright brains who, given the chance, will achieve great things, and that is exactly what we are offering them.

The organizers also mentioned that top teams from various regions and categories will be honored. The ministry further stated that the initiative hopes to encourage kids to become innovators and problem solvers by providing them with fundamental skills and introducing them to the realm of maker culture.

“Our journey towards positioning Nigeria as the go-to-market for technical knowledge cannot be achieved without creating a knowledge pipeline that is represented by these young, impressionable minds,” Tijani said in response to the initiative previously.

The ministry made the announcement in 2023 that it was looking for educators, teachers, and enthusiasts in Maiduguri, Owerri, and Abeokuta for its initiative program called Build-A-Thon.
