Bayelsa State Corps members celebrated the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a unity rally in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Despite the challenges that the NYSC scheme has faced over the years, it has remained a champion of national unity, integration, and development.

The unity rally, which began at the Peace Park, opposite the Government House in Yenagoa, saw state staff and corps members praise the scheme for its accomplishments over the years.

Mrs Okpalifo Obiageli Charity, the state coordinator, said while flagging off the rally that the event was part of the directorate headquarters’ celebration of the scheme.

The theme, “NYSC: Five Decades of Fostering National Unity and Integration,” was appropriate, according to Okpalifo, because the corps was founded on May 22, 1973.

She praised corps members’ contributions in the educational, health, infrastructure, and agricultural sectors over the last fifty years and rated the program very high in terms of national development.

The corps liaison officer (CLO) Yenagoa, corps member Ogugua Clinton Chidera – BY/22B/2207, who spoke on behalf of the corps members, expressed their joy at being a part of this historic event commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the NYSC and assured them that they will continue to serve in the sun or in the rain.
