19 die in Oyo road crash

NOT less than 19 persons lost their lives in an auto crash that occurred on the Oyo-Ogbomoso Road on Sunday.

The fatal crash was said to have been caused by a driver who drove against traffic, causing a head-on collision between a Toyota Hiace Bus registered as NTT52ZY and a Toyota Corolla salon car.

According to a statement by the Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Jonas Agwu, 19 out of 20 persons involved in the crash died.

Agwu said the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, had directed Sector Commanders to step up patrol operations to tackle the menace of route violation on the nation’s highways.

He said, “Owing to the unfortunate fatal crash that claimed 19 lives on Sunday, April 14, 2024 along the Oyo-Ogbomoso route at 0745HRS, due to route violation referred to in local parlance as ‘One Way’, a dastardly traffic violation that resulted in a head-on collision and fire outbreak, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu, has directed sector commanders to step up patrol operations to tackle the menace of route violation on the nation’s highways.

“Crash investigation report submitted to the Corps Marshal regarding the crash indicates that it involved a total of two vehicles, a Toyota Hiace Bus registered as NTT52ZY loaded from Ibadan en route Sokoto, and a Toyota Corolla salon car.

“The report also revealed that the crash, which was caused by route violation, involved 20 people, all male adults. Of this number, 19 persons were killed while the only surviving victim was rescued by FRSC operatives with injuries.

“FRSC rescue team that conducted the rescue operations have taken the injured victim to Opabode hospital for emergency medical attention, while the dead bodies have been deposited at Oyo General Hospital Morgue.

 “The Corps Marshal has, however, called on the motoring public to avoid all incidents that could lead to road traffic crashes on our roads.”
