Army deploys 157 troops for peacekeeping mission in South Sudan

A complete of 157 troops from the Martin Luther Agwai Worldwide Management and Peacekeeping Centre have been deployed to Abyei, South Sudan, on peacekeeping mission.

The troops, who accomplished their six-week pre-deployment coaching on the centre on January 27, 2024, are being deployed as a part of the Nigeria’s contribution to international peace and safety.

The troops, a part of the Nigerian Firm 2 of the United Nations Interim Safety Power in Abyei (NIGCOY 2 UNISFA), comprise 15 officers and 142 troopers.

Addressing the troops at their pre-deployment commencement ceremony in Kaduna on Wednesday, the Chief of Operations, Military Headquarters, Main Common Boniface Sinjen, stated the event demonstrated the dedication and capability of the Nigerian Armed Forces to supply high quality peacekeepers as a part of its contribution to international peace and safety.

In accordance with him, Nigeria’s nationwide defence coverage remained the safety and stability of Africa with particular emphasis on the West African sub-region.

Singen stated, “Nigeria has efficiently participated in over 40 peacekeeping missions and deployed over 100,000 peacekeepers since its first mission within the Congo in 1960.

“All Nigerian peacekeepers, along with others from everywhere in the world, have upheld the course of humanity whereas serving to nations in misery to revive peace and enthrone much-desired growth.”

Earlier, the Commandant of the Centre, Main Common Ademola Adedoja, stated the coaching took the troops by cross-cutting points reminiscent of sexual exploitation and abuse, conflict-related sexual violence, conduct and self-discipline, and safety of civilians, amongst others.
