The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not back its own attorney, Ibrahim Mohammed, when he tried to bring a new charge against Stella Oduah, the former minister of Aviation, using the agency’s name.
According to The Tribune’s report, the newly filed charge verged on perjury and the fabrication of documents. On the other hand, a lawyer for the EFCC named H.A Okonofua told a federal high court in Abuja on July 18 that the anti-corruption agency is unaware of the prosecution of Oduah by Mohammed, who is the only defendant in the case.
Okonofua informed the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, at the beginning of the hearing that the agency’s investigation revealed that “the counsel, Ibrahim Mohammed, was de-seconded back to Nigeria Police on 14 November 2022, and he was not sent to represent the EFCC to prosecute the defendant.” The former minister was not present in court, but Okonofua told the judge that the counsel was not sent to represent the EFCC to prosecute the defendant.
