Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, senator-elect representing Ebonyi North senatorial zone, stated on Sunday that the 10th National Assembly will summon the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to account for the various funds extorted from innocent Nigerians at checkpoints.

Nwaebonyi, who spoke to reporters hours after a thanksgiving service at the ecumenical centre in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state, called on the IGP, Usman, to resign if extortion at checkpoints is not stopped.

The lawmaker bemoaned the ongoing intimidation, harassment, and torture of innocent Nigerians at various checkpoints across the country, particularly in Abuja.

He demanded that the IGP, Usman Akali Baba, resign if the extortion was not stopped within seven (7) days.

“I have been dismayed by the activities of the uniformed men, not only at Onuebonyi Junction, but throughout Nigeria.” I’ve driven across the country.

“Even in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, police officers will stop you and, rather than searching for what you have, they will be interested in how much you will give them.” If you give them a thousand naira, they will sometimes go and get your balance for you.

“They will charge you whatever amount they want you to pay based on your personal evaluation.” These are some of the issues that will be addressed at the 10th National Assembly. This nonsense can’t go on. Nigeria does not operate as a banana republic. It’s a federation. We also have the rule of law.

“It should be formalized if the Nigerian government engages Nigeria police to collect road taxes.” We can’t keep quiet any longer. It should not be allowed to continue.

“This is a robbery of innocent Nigerians.” And we big men will arrive, and they (police) will clear us to pass. However, ordinary people will be present and will be robbed with guns. What a place. Nigeria is Africa’s colossus. It can’t go on like this.

“When the 10th National Assembly convenes, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, will be summoned because I have video evidence of over a hundred of these extortions taking place as I speak.”

“Can’t we just give him (IGP) this poser?” He should leave the office if it does not stop within seven (7) days. He is ineligible to be Inspector General of Police.

“We’re going to tell ourselves the truth. The Angels will not descend to reshape this country; we must do it ourselves. He stated, “The right thing must be done.”
