Governor  Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has kicked against the travel advisory issued by the British High Commission.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, FCDO, had advised its citizens in Nigeria to steer clear of 12 states in Nigeria, saying Boko Haram insurgents were likely to kidnap foreign nationals

The states include Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

But reacting to the statement, Okowa, through his Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, urged the general public to disregard such, insisting that Delta State is safe.

He said, “We are surprised for British High Commission to have included in such statement.

“We wish to urge the general public to disregard the advisory, because our Delta is safe and peaceful.

“Delta is welcoming to tourists and investors all year round. There is no threat to security in Delta.

“We don’t know where and why the advisory is coming from, but we want to believe it may have been an error.”

The Commissioner noted that only recently, the British High Commissioner visited Delta and even toured some communities in the state.

He said Boko Haram is known in the Northern part of the country and not in southern part and not linked to Delta State.
