A leadership summit aimed at charting a new path for Nigeria’s youth concluded Wednesday with calls for the next generation to embrace ethical leadership, community engagement, and technological innovation.
According to a statement on Thursday by Lagos State Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the inaugural Lagos Leadership Summit, organised by the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, brought together political figures, thought leaders, and a large virtual and in-person audience of young people. The event’s theme – “Leadership and Nigeria’s Future” – sparked passionate debates and dialogue.
In his remarks, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasised the pivotal role young people must play. “We believe young people are leaders not only for tomorrow but today,” he stated. “This idea gave birth to the Leadership Academy, through which we provide opportunities for young leaders to learn, innovate and develop skills.”
Sanwo-Olu, who was appointed a Special Adviser at age 37, credited his public service experience for building critical problem-solving abilities. “Character is critical; young people must have the competence and vision to make the changes you want to see,” he urged the attendees.
Former Lagos Governor and ex-Minister Babatunde Fashola cautioned that noble ends can no longer justify unethical means in governance. “The process must be as important as the result,” he insisted. “If the utilitarian value of any policy serves the greatest good, then leadership must pursue it regardless of consequences.”
“In years to come, many people would look back and say it was better that we did it the way it was done,” Fashola added.
Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat lamented the erosion of community engagement, a vital ingredient for social cohesion.
“Today, the foundation for engagement is weak and people have moved towards individualism, which has eroded the values of collectivism entrenched in our culture and civilisation.
“In trying to bridge the gap and create robust community engagement, technologies have given us the speed and instantaneous power to drive change within our communities today,” he said.
Communications Minister Bosun Tijani challenged participants to embrace the coming industrial revolution adding that the future of leadership will be influenced by technological advancement.
Other speakers at the event included the Minister of State for Youth, Ayodele Olawande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, Rinsola Abiola, Lagos Commissioner for Science and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya, Economic Adviser to Katsina State Governor, Khalil Nur Khalil and Founding Partner of Venture Platform, Kola Aina, among others.
“Our world is evolving at an unprecedented pace and the challenges we face require leaders who are not only capable but compassionate, visionary and adaptable,” said LJLA Executive Secretary Mrs Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade.
We believe leadership must transcend rhetoric and manifest tangible outcomes. We need leaders who inspire confidence, foster unity, and drive transformation,” she said.
