Urgent tasks for new education minister

I congratulate Prof. Tahir Mamman on being named the next Minister of Education for our magnificent country of Nigeria. As a concerned citizen and supporter of high-quality education, I would like to draw your attention to a few important initiatives that, in my opinion, should be given top priority in order to enhance our educational system.

The first step in any education reform is to strengthen the Local Government Education Authorities. We must increase the LGEAs’ participation in the provision of basic education. We can ensure that resources are distributed wisely, infrastructure is upgraded, and all students, regardless of their socioeconomic level, have access to school by collaborating closely with these authorities. The creation of a robust partnership between the federal and municipal levels is necessary. LGEAs should be heavily involved in overseeing and ensuring the quality of schools because they are more nimble. They ought to be given the authority and tools they need to manage schools, oversee the teaching of the curriculum, and guarantee student learning outcomes.

Second, systematic approaches to encouraging literacy growth are necessary. It is essential to create a thorough literacy development plan in order to solve the issues caused by the low literacy rate in our nation. There will be a clear path for improvement if each State Universal Basic Education Board establishes defined goals for literacy accomplishments. We can provide our kids with the fundamental abilities necessary for their academic and personal growth by putting an emphasis on early reading interventions, literacy initiatives, and teacher preparation.

Thirdly, giving attention to improving teacher welfare and training should be a top priority. Since teachers are the foundation of our educational system, we must support their welfare and make investments in their professional growth. The type of instructors we need should be reflected in the hiring process. In basic education, we require the best personnel. To enable teachers to provide kids with a high-quality education, we must establish chances for ongoing training and professional development. A more effective welfare system will also increase their motivation and dedication to influencing the future of our country via education. This includes fair salary and support services like housing, transportation, and quality classrooms.

It is well known that creating a thorough book policy to ensure that students have access to high-quality educational resources is essential for their overall development. Therefore, I implore the next education minister to give top priority to developing and implementing a book strategy for the nation’s basic education. Every child should have access to carefully chosen, current, and varied educational resources thanks to this policy. We can develop a compelling learning environment that encourages curiosity and a love of learning in our children by working together with publishers, educators, and stakeholders.

Dear Minister of Education, we can completely transform Nigeria’s educational system by tackling these issues and putting out workable plans. We have the chance to give all children equal educational opportunities thanks to your leadership and commitment, and to raise a generation of people who are self-assured, competent, and empowered.

I have faith in your determination to improve our educational system. I hope that the pursuit of educational excellence and transformational changes will define your term. Let’s work together to influence our country’s future through high-quality education.
