Kanu: Super Eagles will win AFCON trophy

Nwankwo Kanu, a great in Nigerian football, predicted that the Super Eagles would win the 2023 CAF African Cup of Nations.

African Footballer of the Year Kanu twice, in 1996 and 1999, stated in a video that was uploaded on his X account on Wednesday.

In the video, he emphasized that the Nigerian football team will go to the final and win the tournament, with a pivotal semi-final matchup against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana scheduled for this Wednesday.

Known by most as “Papilo,” the legendary player for Arsenal stated, “I told you from the beginning, from the first game – believe, trust.”

“The boys have made us very happy.” Here we go, the semifinals. We will make it to the finals and win this event, like I promised. Offer them prayers, encouragement, and well wishes.

The legendary football player in the country pleaded with Coach Jose Peseiro’s team to win the trophy again, as it was last won in 2019.

We use this cup. It is returning home. Super Eagles, rally on! Go on, you’re capable of this! There are just two games left, and history will be made,” he remarked.

The semi-final game will take place at Bouake’s Stade de la Paix on Wednesday.

Nigeria and South Africa are playing each other for the fourth time in a competition; the Eagles have won the first three meetings.

It kicks off at six o’clock. Nigerian time.

Nigeria won the round of 16 match 2-0 over Cameroon.

The team then advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Angola in the quarterfinals by a single goal.

The boys from Bafana Bafana defeated Morocco, the World Cup semifinalists from the previous year, 2-0 in their round of 16 encounter. They then defeated Cape Verde 2-1 in a penalty shootout.

In a phone interview with AFP from the South African port city of Durban, defender Neil Tovey, who led the team that won the championship in 1996, said that the match against Nigeria will be difficult.

“It’s going to be a final before the final against Nigeria,” he declared.
